If you're familiar with the Transitions Lifestyle System, or if you're a past student, you KNOW how well this program works! Partly because it covers all the cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle (diet, stress management, nutritional support and exercise). I am excited to announce that Transitions for Kids starts this fall (exact date tbd).
We all know that our children are in a dangerous situation: one in six kids in America are overweight and we a seeing 8 year olds put on Lipitor. Just as we would rescue a toddler playing in the middle of a busy intersection, we MUST rescue our children from obesity and the health problems associated with it (metabolic syndrome, diabetes, fatty liver, heart disease, etc). Transitions for Kids will have the same base as the popular Transitions Lifestyle Program with but with an age specific focus on kids (two groups - 5-8 year olds & 9-16 year olds) as well as a component for parents.
I'll have more details in the next few weeks, and if you would like to be updated send an email to: nutritionaltherapy1to1@comcast.net!

Does Transitions REALLY work? You decide!
Here are just a few Transitions success stories -

Why does Transitions work so well?? Because unlike traditional "diets", Transitions is a LIFESTYLE program. Long term success can only be achieved by incorporating a healthy lifestyle including proper nutrition and nutritional support, the RIGHT kind of exercise and managing the damaging effects of a stressful life.
In 12 weeks, Transitions shows you how to make these changes, easily and without making it a second career! Everything is laid out for you to follow and most importantly you'll experience improved health in many other areas beside weight loss!
If you prefer, Transitions is also available thru an online, individual program as well as the for the Workplace.
Call today to attend out next class - (971) 227-9919!

New on the Scene: HCG Diet
You would think we would know better, but everytime a new "Miracle Diet" raises it's ugly head, we all think "Here it is!".
The latest one that has come to my attention is the HCG Diet. In a nutshell, you either take injections or a sublingual homeopathic formula of human chorionic gonadotropin, a pregnancy hormone produced by the embryo soon after conception. This is combined with a 500 calorie per day eating plan.
The problems with this?? Where do I begin!? First off, the endocrine system is a delicate balancing act that is already under stress by a variety of assults on a daily basis. Birth control pills, hormone creams, diet, stress all have an impact on our hormones. I like to think that the innate wisdom of the human body has an embryo making this hormone for a reason, and when the need is gone, levels fall. Messing with the hormone system is just asking for trouble.
And then there is the matter of the 500 calorie a day diet. Yes, the theory that after weeks/months of eating 500 calories your habits will change, in reality, I have seldom seen that work out. Most people cannot maintain this type of diet for more than a day or two, and if they do, most of the time we don't want to be around them!
500 calories will throw your body into starvation mode, STORE fat and burn muscle for energy. You may lose weight (see previous post for that rant) but in the long run you will end up gaining it back. The fact the the injections/formula is supposed to burn fat does not compensate for the natural tendencies of our bodies.
Long term, permanent, healthy weight loss will only be achieved thru a healthly lifestyle that includes the proper foods, exercise, stress management. I'll probably get some arguments on this, but in my practice I see too many people with whacked out hormones, poor health, diet and lifestyle habits to endorse this as a healthy way to lose weight!

Fat Loss vs Weight Loss
So many people ask me what is the best "weight" loss program. Well, just about any fad diet can give you "weight" loss. Starving yourself will result in "weight" loss and there are, of course, lots of pills (hydroxycut, alli) who guarantee "weight" loss. But let's look at what you're losing.
Dieting in the traditional sense (calorie or food restriction, pills, meal replacement) slows your metabolism, throws your body into fat storage mode and pretty much makes you cranky and unpleasant to be around. You may lose "weight" but, at best (!?) this is water loss and on the down side is muscle loss. If your body thinks you're starving it will store everything (yes, even broccoli and boiled chicken) as FAT and break down muscle for energy. And of course, it's muscle that dictates metabolism!!
This is why diet after diet we lose weight only to gain it back (and more). Muscle weighs more than fat so losing 20lbs in muscle and gaining back 20lbs of fat will look like 40lbs on you. That's why often as we get older (and have dieted more) our weight may be the same on the scale, but our clothes have gone up a size or two.
Don't be deceived by "weight" loss promises - you need to lose fat and build muscle for permanent body composition changes. Don't rely on the scale - it can be deceptive! Instead, take your measurements (bust, waist, hips, thighs, upper arm and calf) and aim to lose inches! This is more reflective of fat/muscle ratio.
Of course, the best way to build muscle is through exercise! And you don't have to make it a second career! Walk for 30-60 minutes twice a day and do 30 minutes of resistance training 3 times a week. In addition, don't skip meals, drink lots of water, keep stress to a minimum and stick to eating low to medium GI foods. You know, like the Transitions Lifestyle System!

Why Transitions Lifestyle System?
The name says it all - LIFESTYLE! Magic Pills, liquid diets, caloric restriction, cutting out whole food groups (carbs, fats, etc) WILL NOT lead you to permanent, healthy weight loss! Most of us have proven that these methods with provide us with a temporary solution to getting into those shorts, swimsuit, dress, but we have also seen that in no time at all we are back to the "fat" end of the closet, possibly even bigger than we were before!

Every time we "diet" our metabolism slows. Our bodies don't realize our cupboards and pantries are full and think we're starving! So, just as we did 10,000 years ago when there was a food shortage, everything gets stored as fat. Plus, we start to lose muscle and water (which is why we lose "weight" although we think we're losing fat!).
The only way to reach a healthy weight is with a healthy LIFESTYLE! That includes what you're eating, nutritional support if needed, managing your stress/cortisol levels and getting moving! I'm not talking about trading being a food junkie for a workout junkie, but you have to get moving. Period. End of discussion! Just start walking 1/2 an hour twice a day (and especially after you have a tense moment or confrontation - this will stabalize your cortisol) to start.
The Transitions Lifestyle System hits all these components which is why it has proven successful for losing 20 lbs or 200 lbs. Over 12 weeks you'll change your eating habits, how your manage stress and exercise, your attitudes toward health & your weight, and most importantly, re-shape your body in a healthful way, losing fat and building muscle!
Transitions Lifestyle programs are available in Beaverton & Lake Oswego NT1:1 class locations, as well as an individual, online 12 week series. For more information contact Nutritional Therapy 1:1 @ (971) 227-9919 or visit http://www.transitionsforhealth.info/

Fat Pill??
So I have just seen yet another news story about research to develop some magic "Fat Pill". . . Why does so much time, money and attention go into something that will allow people to continue to eat poorly, maintain poor lifestyle habits and then take a pill that in all likelihood will lead to more health problems down the road???
I have been accused of being a conspiracy theorist but I wonder if anyone has looked into who is funding some of these studies?? I wouldn't be surprised to see some packaged goods manufacturers behind some of these: "Keep eating my unhealthy food and just take the magic fat pill!"
Seriously, the only way to reach your healthy weight is to CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE to support good health. Our bodies are amazing machines, going on day after day even with the abuse we heap on them.
As a recovering carb addict myself, I know how hard making those changes can be. And exercise has NEVER been my idea of a good time! But I also know that even 1/2 hour of walking every day makes a big difference in how I feel and what I can eat! Make even one small change each day or even each week; buy products without high fructose corn syrup or hydrogenated oils. Buy fresh produce at the local farmer's market; make meal preparation a family affair.
Little changes add up to lifestyle changes. No pill needed.

What is the Glycemic Index?
One of the cornerstones of the Transitions Lifestyle System is choosing foods from the low end of the Glycemic Index. But What IS the GI???
Simply put, the Glycemic Index is a measurement of how quickly carbs impact your blood sugar levels. The higher the index (sugar, white bread, potatoes) the quicker these foods spike blood sugar and the release of insulin. Diets filled with high GI foods can lead to overeating, obesity, diabetes, inflammation and a variety of other maladies.
With Transitions we focus on eating Low GI to limit those blood sugar spikes. This keeps the blood sugar "dominoes" from tipping over!
